The Beddington Zero Energy Development in Wallington, South London England. More than half of the materials used to construct the community were harvested or created in less than a 37 mile radius of the settlement and fifteen percent of the materials were recycled or reclaimed. More than one hundred people have lived and worked in BedZED since 2002. This community has effectively lessened space heating costs and consumption by 88% and have reduced resident automobile transportation by 65%. Although it may not be considered an ecovillage proper, its environmental design and community basis makes it a compelling example of low-impact urban development.
